Making iTunes your default audio player

iTunes can play many types of audio files, such as music and spoken programs. You can set iTunes to open and play a file automatically whenever you play or download a file from the Internet, or open an audio file from Windows Explorer (as long as iTunes can open that type of file).

If you use Windows XP:

  • Choose Edit > Preferences.

  • Click Advanced.

  • Click the Set button next to “Use iTunes as the default player for audio files.”

If you use Windows Vista:

  • Choose Start > Default Programs.

  • Click “Set your default programs.”

  • In the list on the left, click iTunes.

  • Click “Set this program as defaut.”

Even if iTunes isn’t your default audio player, you can play any audio file using iTunes by right-clicking the file and choosing Open With iTunes.
