Consolidating your library

Depending on how you’ve imported songs, videos, and other items into iTunes, your library can include items that are located in various places on your computer’s hard disk or other locations.

You can make sure that copies of all the files in your iTunes library are in your iTunes folder so that, for example, it’s easier to move your library to a new computer.

To copy all your iTunes files into your iTunes folder:

  1. Choose File > Library > Organize Library.

  2. Select “Consolidate files.”

Files located outside the iTunes folder will remain in their current locations, and copies will be placed in your iTunes folder.

  3. If you haven’t yet upgraded your iTunes Music folder, you can do so now by selecting “Convert to iTunes Media folder.”

This renames the iTunes Music folder to iTunes Media, and places all your iTunes library files in the appropriate subfolders (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, and so on).
