Connecting an iPod or another music player

You can connect any iPod or a third-party digital music player to your computer and then sync it with songs from your iTunes library. With some iPod models, you can also sync photos, videos, and games onto your iPod.

To connect a device to your computer:

  • For iPod shuffle (2nd generation), place iPod shuffle in its dock and connect the cable to a USB port on your computer.

  • For iPod shuffle (1st generation), remove the cap or lanyard and connect iPod shuffle to a USB port on your computer.

  • For all other devices, connect the device to your computer using the cable that came with the device.

If you see a dialog telling you to restart your computer, restart and then open iTunes. An icon for your device appears in the iTunes window (below Devices). Before disconnecting your device, click the Eject button next to the device.

iTunes works with several music players, but songs purchased on the iTunes Store play only on iPod and iPhone.

For more information about connecting or disconnecting your iPod, see the documentation that came with your iPod or visit the iPod website.
